TITLE IX

June 23, 1972
Title IX law revolutionized
college sports 42 years ago

This month of June 2014 marks the 42nd anniversary of Title IX, made law on June 23, 1972, which forbids sex discrimination in all student services and academic programs. It states (in part)...

No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance.
Title IX is responsible for the explosion of women's opportunity to play college sports by ensuring women enjoy the same advantages that are offered men. In fact, Wesley College now has nine varsity sports programs for women versus eight varsity teams for men.

The video below tells the story of Title IX. It features trailblazers that led to the passage of Title IX as well as women who were on campus during the early days of Title IX enactment.
