FOOTBALL #4

USA Today report
Wesley Wolverine football
ranked #4 nationally this fall

Not softball news, not even unexpected news – still, proud news for Wesley College athletics...

Junior quarterback Joe Callahan passed
last season for an NCAA Division III Playoff
Record eight touchdowns and 633 yards
in the National Quarterfinals.

The Wesley Wolverines football team will launch their season this fall ranked fourth in the nation among DIII universities and colleges, per The 2014 USA Today College Football Preview Magazine.

That is truly amazing
-- especially when Wolverine football's national high rankings are so consistently earned year after year -- for a small college with a student body of under 1,600, according to US News & World Report latest stats

NINA REPORT #1

Making contact with every at bat!

Catching rays at the beach,
resort pool and softball field

REPORT (AND PHOTOS) FROM Wesley Wolverine sophomore catcher Nina Marcano (Townsend, DE) after her first few days at The Beach League summer games, Pawley Island, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

NINA WRITES...

“This is my room” – Nina
Myrtle Beach has been an even better experience then I could have hoped for so far.

I live in a condo on a golf resort less then a mile away from the field where I play. There are seven girls in my condo and my roommate does remind me very much of (Wesley Wolverine teammate) Steph. She's a speedy outfielder who plays a lot of small ball.

The girls here are very nice and friendly. We go to the local gym where we are given a discount for being Beach League players.

“Here is a snapshot of
our living room  and
kitchen area”– Nina

My days consist of relaxing, going to the gym, playing softball and enjoying the Myrtle Beach life with the other Beach Leaguers. We've had a couple of beach trips. We usually play our games around 7:00 or 7:30 PM.

The first game was a bit nerve racking. After I made contact, my nerves slowly went away.

There is a very relaxed and laid back vibe here. If mistakes or errors are made, there is no pressure from teammates. Instead, they offer encouraging words.

I've made contact with the ball in each at bat so far, which I am very happy about.

“A snapshot of the resort
on our short walk to the
pool the other day” – Nina
There are no signals from coaches. If you want to bunt or steal or slap, you can do whenever you want.

The league is designed to help me work on the things I need to work on. The coaches are there for help, if you'd like it, but it's really on you.

I feel pretty good so far. I am taking each inning as it comes and reminding myself it's just a game.

Today my roommates and I slept in. We had planned to go to the beach, since it is our day off, but it seems like a storm is coming through. So we will be going to the gym instead and then preparing a nice meal for ourselves.” -- Nina

TC RECRUITING

San Diego tournament
Coach Juli Greep instructing,
recruiting at TC World Series

Fastpitch softball tournaments can be like reunions. Former teammates and competitors, past coaches and instructors, and just prior fastpitch acquaintances, can all suddenly appear at a game or pass by on their way to another game.

Wesley Wolverines Whitney Dibb and Head Coach
Juli Greep at the TC World Series, San Diego, CA.
Wesley Wolverine Head Coach Juli Greep has certainly bumped into her share of present and past ties at the TC (Triple Crown) World Series, being played now through Saturday, July 19, in San Diego, CA. Coach Greep is one of 37 coaches from across the nation who
is teaching and coaching at the event as well as actively recruiting prospects for Wesley softball back home.

► Whitney!

The first familiar face to cross Coach Greep's path was our own
Wesley Wolverine sophomore C/3B Whitney Dibb!

Actually, that's really no surprise, because Whitney lives nearby in La Mesa, California. She was recruited by Coach Greep at Nevada's 2012 TC Las Vegas Sparkler tournament, when Whitney was entering her senior year of high school.

Whitney is the lone Wolverine softball player from west of the Mississippi. Now that might change as these two spread the word of Wesley's small school educational and athletic opportunities back east.

Head Coach Tony Segovia
► Tony Segovia

Next, “I ran into my assistant coach from college,” said Coach Greep of Tony Segovia, Head Coach of the Friends University Falcons (Wichita, Kansas). She noted: “I believe he's won a minimum of 7 titles” since his coaching days at -- and her undergraduate player days hurling from the circle for -- the McPherson College Bulldogs (McPherson, Kansas).

► Hose Bell

“Also I coached the tournament's All Star Game with Hose Bell, who formerly coached against me when I played at McPherson,” Coach Greep said. Coach Bell now heads up the Langston University Lions (Langston, Oklahoma) softball team.

“He heavily recruited me me out of high school,” Coach Greep said about Coach Bell, who, at the time, represented a college team “only a few miles from my parents house,” she said. Instead of playing so close to home “I made the 45 mile trek up to McPherson College,” she added.

Coach Greep is enjoying success out west, meeting up with old friends, recruiting new talent, and coaching all-star players. “We won our game today 8-3!” she said.

STEFANY TIBERI

Softball/ field hockey athlete
Stefany Tiberi named to
Wesley Athletic Hall of Fame

Wesley Athletic Hall of Fame inductee
Stefany Tiberi (on left) playing field hockey
just recently in a local Delaware league.
Wesley Wolverine Stefany Tiberi (Class of 2005) has been named to the Wesley College Athletic Hall of Fame for her two-sport outstanding accomplishments in field hockey and softball. Along with 12 other new members, the induction will take place on Friday, October 3, 2014 at the Wesley College Chapel, Corner of Division and Bradford Streets, Dover, DE.

The citation reads (with this blog's own added emphasis on her softball record placed in green type):

Stefany Tiberi ('05) Earning five All-PAC honors with three in field hockey and two in softball, Tiberi led the field hockey team to three PAC Championships and NCAA Tournament after being named PAC Championship Game MVP and All-Region in 2004. Named team captain in field hockey twice and once in softball, Tiberi still ranks seventh at Wesley with 19 career assists in field hockey and ranks among softball leaders in several categories. A member of the DIAA Field Hockey Committee, Tiberi coaches both field hockey and softball at Middletown High School after starting the field hockey team at Appoquinimink High School.”

As noted above, Stefany is the varsity softball head coach for the Middletown High School Cavaliers, where she also teaches, as well as a previous field hockey head coach for many years for the Appoquinimink High School Jaguars. Both schools are located a short distance north of the Wesley College campus.

at a 2010 summer softball travel ball tournament.
Nicki, Stefany's sister and an exceptional athlete
herself, often caught and assisted in Lily's pitching
lesson with Stefany. In high school, both Stefany
and Nicki earned All-State athletic recognition at
William Penn High School, New Castle, Delaware.

Besides being a standout Wesley College athlete in her undergraduate days, when she pitched for the Wolverines softball team, Stefany also has strong ties to our current Wesley Wolverine fastpitch squad.

► She was
Wesley Wolverine sophomore pitcher Lily Engel's pitching coach for two years during Lily's 2010 and 2011 high school seasons.

► She was
Wesley Wolverine sophomore catcher Nina Marcano's Middletown High School softball varsity coach for four years, 2010- 2013.

Congratulations Stefany! The honor is so very well deserved!

At the plate, Nina drilled a single between second and short in her first at bat against Washington Husky senior pitcher Hailey Bator (Cle Elum, WASH). Nina finished the game 1-for-2 with a fly ball to right field.

Behind the plate, Nina caught a multi-repertoire of pitches tossed by Florida Seminoles sophomore pitcher Jessica Burroughs (Warner Robins, GA) for Team Lime. Burroughs struck out eight from the circle in the five inning shorten game.

They will resume play again today at 7:00 PM EDT.

ESF GAMES

Softball championship games
World Cup decided today, while
Russia defeats Czechs in Europe

While the World Cup of Softball IX is still underway – championship game set for today, Sunday, July 13 – in Irvine, California, the European Softball Federation (ESF) held its own championship game yesterday, Saturday, July 12, in Dupnitsa, Bulgaria.

European ESF games
The ESF has been around since 1976 when it was created for “promoting and developing softball in Europe”.

AT THE LARGER WORLD CUP COMPETITION, the USA team is undefeated, playing at a 6-0 clip against rivals, but Canada is right behind the red, white and blue with a 5-1 record, having lost so far only to the Americans in a close 5-3 game. The title game will be contested today.

AT THE ESF CHAMPIONSHIP GAME, it was a slugfest that went into extra innings between the Czech Republic and Russian national teams. At the end of seven, the Czech scored a run in the top of the eighth only to watch the game slip away 14-13 when Russia batted for a walk off win. CLICK HERE for the box score. FIRST BEACH LEAGUE GAME

First Beach League game
Nina steals a base
and draws two walks

Wesley Wolverine sophomore catcher Nina Marcano (Townsend, DE) took off on the base paths in her first Beach League game (Myrtle Beach, SC) yesterday evening, Saturday, July 12, right where she left off last spring at DuPont Field, Dover, DE.

Nina Marcano

Nina, the team stolen base leader last season, swiped another one last night and score a run after drawing two walks against a tough hurler Washington Husky senior pitcher Kasey Stancheck (El Dorado Hills, Calif).

Every run counted as Nina's team lost a closely fought contest 4-3 when the opponents scored 2 runs in the bottom of the seventh.

In her five innings of work, flame thrower Stanckeck struck out eight and allowed no earned runs. Nina, batting clean up, sharply hit a grounder to shortstop, which she almost beat out, in her only official at bat, after her 2 Ws.

The Beach League games can be followed online at GameChanger.

PLAYING CLEAN

Former Tennessee Lady Volunteers standout, now National Pro Fastpitch star Monica Abbott on why the Chicago Bandits enjoy such a large fan base....

"I think that what we put on on the field, how we play, and how we carry ourselves, it's very, it's almost, it's really pure," said Abbott. "We play softball with a childlike love for the game, and that's a pureness that only a 12-year-old knows."

PITCHING VS OFFENSE

But defense key too!
Importance of offense
vs pitching for winning?

On May 4, 2014, Daniel Urban of The Softball Channel wrote:

Wesley Wolverine P/MI Lindsay Siok  hurls
from the circle and hits at the plate as well
“This year the most prolific offense is Auburn... The team has put up 349 runs in 44 games for an average of 7.93 runs per game...

“The 4th most potent offense in the NCAA this season is Arkansas... The Razorbacks have scored 324 runs in 45 games for a 7.02 runs per game average...

“Auburn and Alabama are ranked #1 and #4 in the SEC in runs scored, but rank #9 and last in the standings. The best pitchers in the game average less than a single run allowed per 7 innings, so the offense only needs to score one run on average to win those games. You don’t need a potent offense to (be) a great team.”

BEACH LEAGUE STARTS

Three weeks of games
The Beach League
camp starts today

Wesley Wolverine catcher Nina Marcano is on her way to The Beach League summer games, Pawley Island, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Goodbyes for a short time given dad Jose
by Nina and mom Ivelisse. Jose will join
Nina in Myrtle Beach toward the league's end.
Goodbyes have been said to dad Jose, who stays behind for now in Townsend, DE. Glove, bat, and catcher's gear packed, Nina, mom Ivelisse and brother Carlos started their 9+ hour trek yesterday, driving south down the entire Delmarva Peninsula.

“They left last night for Exmore, Virginia” Jose reported about their first stop on the long trip.

“We reached the Holiday Inn around midnight,” added Nina.

Exmore is located at the bottom of the peninsula. It is a small town of 1,449 and dates its history as far back as 1661.

Extremely rural, Exmore sits on a sliver of land between the famed Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic ocean.

“Chesapeake bay bridge
and tunnel this morning,”
Nina wrote in a text message.

Then, it was up early this morning as this three member Wolverine family team tackled the 23-mile-long crossing of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel over to Norfolk, VA, where they are still 5-1/2 hours (337 miles) away from Myrtle Beach and Nina's new home for the next thee weeks at the True Blue Resort.

“All is well, everyone is in good spirits and eager to meet and greet (the Beach League coaches and teammates),” said Jose.

Many other college players, near and far, are traveling today, too, toward the same destination.

Players from north, west, and south and major conferences, like the SEC, ACC, Big 10, Big 12, PAC 12, Atlantic 10, etc., will gather this afternoon for the beginning of the three week camp and softball league.

As you read this post, Nina undoubtedly has already unpacked and joined her four new roommates to sign-in for the 2014 Beach League season!

Wesley Wolverine Junior 2B Bre Hartman is taking on new roles.

► Co-captain

Named co-captain of the Wesley team at the end of last season, along with Junior C/UT Morgan Seymour and Junior 3B Kayla Fromal, Bre also has a brand new responsibility as a club team coach this 2014 summer to add to her softball portfolio.

► First base coach

An alumni of the NJ Fury (Eatontown,NJ), she returned to her home in Red Bank, NJ, at the end of last semester, to join both her younger sister, Kaylee, who plays for the 18U Fury, and her older sister, Samantha, who serves as the team's third base coach. Bre now is shouting encouragement to batters and sending runners from her first base coach's box.

Sisters, coaches, softball players,

Samantha is a graduate of Keystone College, where she played for our own Wolverine Head Coach Juli Greep, who previously spent three years as head coach of the Keystone Giants. Kaylee will be a college freshman this fall and play for the William Patterson University Pioneers.

► 23U player

Bre and Samantha are still suiting up this summer to swing their bats as fastpitch players. Both are on the roster of the 23U NJ Fury squad.

► Competitor

But they are not always on the same side.

Two years ago, Bre and Samantha squared off against each other as the Wesley Wolverines contested the Keystones Giants on spring break in Myrtle Beach during 2013.

Wolverine Bre Hartman coaches
for the 18U and plays for
23U NJ Fury this summer.
In that game, Samantha was 3-for-3 with a double and two runs scored as Keystone triumphed 8-6.

“They are teammates, competitors, but always family” noted Coach Greep about the close relationship between these three sisters who also love the game of softball.

On the horizon some day: Bre & the Wesley Wolverines versus younger sister Kaylee & the William Patterson University Pioneers? It's possible. Time will tell.

TC WORLD SERIES

214 teams attending
Head Coach Juli Greep recruiting
@ TC World Series, San Diego, CA

Triple Crown (TC) Sports is well known for organizing premier sporting events across the USA.

Next week's TC World Series of championship softball, played July 14-19 in San Diego, CA, is no exception.

As part of Triple Crown's promised superior experience for attending players, the event has signed up 37 coaches from 23 states, who, outside of the regular tournament pool play, will teach clinics, coach separate showcase teams, and recruit for their college or university softball teams.

Among this year's coaching staff will be Wesley Wolverine Head Coach Juli Greep.

Head Coach Juli Greep
“I am part of a group of coaches who will run a clinic and showcase games on Monday, then stay and recruit at the event all week,” said Coach Greep.

There will be a lot of talent to watch. In its 18th year now, the TC World Series is a popular venue.

A total of 214 teams will compete in this tournament. The 18U teams number 95, while 16U teams top off at 119, all from hometowns across the country with the majority traveling from California and nearby Arizona, Colorado, or Utah.

Monday's pre-tournament showcase games, run by the college coaches, are set up to ensure every player has the opportunity to be showcased that day at her primary position.

“Triple crown is the event in Las Vegas I attended in the fall of 2012 where we picked up Whitney,” added Coach Greep, “so I know there are quality athletes who want to travel and experience the east coast style of living while receiving a quality education.”

Coach Greep offers encouragement
to a Wolverine during 2014 season
“Whitney” is Wesley Wolverine sophomore C/3B Whitney Dibb who hails from La Mesa, California. The Wesley College campus, of course, is 2,700 miles away from her ultra-sunny Southern California home. Still, Whitney, quite remarkably, seemed to quickly and easily adapt to Southern Delaware's small town living, studying, and very competitive softball play.

Let's hope this year Coach Greep finds another Whitney or two looking eastward for a small school's first-rate, more personalized, collegiate experience.

BEACH LEAGUE PLANNING

The Beach League, Myrtle Beach, SC
Nina Marcano prepares for
3+ weeks of summer softball

It all begins 48 hours from now.

That's when Wesley Wolverine catcher Nina Marcano departs for the College Summer League for Softball (Myrtle Beach, SC), AKA “The Beach League”, early on Friday morning, July 11. She will drive there from her Townsend, DE, home, sharing the wheel with her mother Ivelisse and brother Carlos. Sign-in for Nina is “no later than” 4:00 PM that evening.

UNIFORM

Nike Dri Fit Loose Tee Jersey
The Beach League has kept in touch.

“They asked me what number I wanted,” Nina said. She requested “18”, same as her Wolverine uniform.

She will receive two Nike uniform t-shirts, black pants, socks, belt, and a black batting helmet once she arrives. Of course, she brings her own bat(s) and glove(s).

 BEST OF BEST

Nina will be tested on the softball field. The Beach League attracts the best of the best. Topnotch players from the major DI conferences of the northeast certainly will challenge her.

“There will be high quality players which will allow me to work on hitting,” Nina stated.

“I will see faster pitching and more spins so when I return and play the top DIII teams in the country I will be able to identify the pitch and have more success,” she added.

Wesley College really does face the best in the nation amongst DIII schools during their regular season. Nina is hardly exaggerating.

For example, in the Capitol Athletic Conference (CAC), where Wesley plays, the Wolverines every spring take on the Salisbury Sea Gulls, ranked #2 in the nation by the NFCA Division III poll, as well as the Christopher Newport Captains, who, not only won the CAC championship last year, but ended up with a #6 rank nationally by NFCA at the season's close.

Last year, Wesley was scheduled to play – a game ultimately rained out – the Virginia Wesleyan Marlins, who currently enjoy a NFCA #11 ranking.

In 2013, six players from the St. Bonaventure Bonnies (pictured above) attended the camp. CLICK HERE for their video titled “St. Bonaventure Softball takes on Beach League.

 COACHES

Nina and her
Beach League teammates also will be exposed to various coaching styles.

“Our coaches rotate daily among the staff that was hired,” Nina explained. “The Keystone College Head Coach Renee Barrows is one of the coaches who will be in attendance.”

Wolverine Head Coach Juli Greep is a p
ast Keystone head coach and Wolverine Assistant Coach Abby Cohen was a standout player for her there.

The Beach League Softball Field: Waccamaw High School, 2412 Kings River Road, Pawleys Island, SC. Field information: Bullpen, dugouts, concession stands, restrooms, clubhouse, locker room, press box, l-screens, field screens, soft toss net.

ROSTERS

The Beach League team rosters are slated to be shuffled every morning.

"There will be approximately 40+ young women and teams will be drafted each day so everyone will get a chance to play with one another,” Nina said.

It will get very competitive for sure, especially as the final week nears. “Toward the end of the league we will be placed onto teams and have a tournament type event,” she noted.

It's practice and play, then practice and play again. “I believe we have about an hour of practice prior to our games each day” Nina said.

 BEACH TIME

Myrtle Beach State Park
It's not all dirt and grass every day, however. There's the Myrtle Beach seaside with downtime exploring to do, too.

“We will play one game a day with one or two days off here and there,” Nina said.

“There is nothing specific planned, but I’m assuming we will spend a lot of time on the beach.”

Nina is known to prefer surf and sand second only to a softball field.

HOUSING

There may be demanding play for Nina, whether batting or catching between the circle and home plate, but the living and relaxing at end of day should be spectacular.

Nina will be staying in a three bedroom condo at the True Blue Resort on Myrtle Beach's Pawley Island, which is described as being famous for its unspoiled natural beauty and “arrogantly shabby” way of life. It's advertising promises: “Southern charm, comfort and coastal beauty.”

“The resort is located less than a mile from the fields where we will be playing at” said Nina. The Pawley Island is connected to Myrtle Beach by two bridges, which appear to cross both ocean and river water.

 ROOMMATES

“I will have 5 roommates none of whom I know yet,” said Nina. “Roommates have not been announced.”

True Blue Golf Plantation
It should not be crowded living conditions with plenty of space within the condo including a large living and dining room, and two beds per bedroom, each with its own bathroom.

The condos feature multiple TV’s, washer/dryer units, full-service kitchens, high speed Internet and screened-in porches. Nearby are BBQ areas, tennis courts, outdoor pool with jacuzzi and, all around, as it is promoted, “the breathtaking natural splendor” of the True Blue Golf Plantation.

 GOOD TIMES

All in all, it is a nice summer assignment: play the best of college USA players daily while residing in first-class resort accommodations of vacation town Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
